I make each sculpture out of clay and lay a piece of wet leather on
top to let it dry. Once the leather is dry, I take that off and mount it to
a Styrofoam backing and paint it with acrylics. I re-use the clay for
another sculpture. The clay is the support but is not used in the final
sculpture.
Leather is the most satisfying material I have ever worked with.
Through trial and error, I have found my artistic niche. I always start with an idea of what I want to make but leather has a will of its own. Each one is a surprise.
Depending on the season, humidity, temperature, and thickness the leather takes between 1 and 3 days to dry completely. I
started out making relief sculptures that hang on the wall and now I have branched out to free standing 3-D sculptures.
